| Summary, etc. | Eduard Schweizer, the noted biblical scholar, answers this question from a comprehensive knowledge of the material. He investigates the roles of the Spirit in the Old Testament, intertestamental literature, and the New Testament. From an extensive study of these texts, he identifies several marks of the Spirit's presence: closeness to Jesus and the Father, freedom, community, direction, and openness to God and the future. Schweizer relates the biblical evidence about the Holy Spirit to topics of widespread interest, including Jesus and the Spirit, baptism of fire and of water, speaking in tongues and prophesying, immortality and resurrection, guidance by the Spirit, and being ""born again."" In each instance, he also considers the theological implications for life in the church. |
