Her picture of the Baptist is entirely credible in the context of late Second Temple Judaism, and she decisively debunks the facile attempts to associate him with the Essenes or Qumran. This book is a significant contribution both to the history of Judaism in the early Roman period and to the background of the New Testament and the historical Jesus. |
