Vermes brings his considerable knowledge of the Jewish sources, including especially the rabbinic writings and the Qumran writings, to bear on an analysis of Jesus’ religion and beliefs as presented in the Synoptic Gospels. Overall, the emphasis is upon seeing Jesus as part of the Jewish teaching and belief of his times. Thus, for example, Jesus is not seen by Vermes to teach anything contradictory to the law. In fact, according to Vermes, he is a great upholder of its purpose and intent.
