Specifically Sampley seeks to identify the presence and assess the function of the Roman legal `partnership` the consentual societas, in key Pauline Epistles - Galatians, Philippians, Corinthians, Philemon. Paul is shown to have been creatively flexible in adapting the legal traditions and terminology of societas for theological purposes.
