The goal of this study is to discover how I Peter’s references to Christ’s suffering and glorification were intended to function, within the social conventions of the time, as integral parts of the letter’s response to the suffering of the communities addressed. To this end, I shall focus on the interaction among four aspects of the letter: its social situation, its explicit statements about suffering, its symbolic construction of a communal self-identity for the addressees, and its references to Christ. An introductory survey of recent literature on 1 Peter, with special reference to the relationship among these four topics, will serve to clarify some of the issues involved in pursuing my objective.
