Summary: Karl Ludwig Schmidt's seminal work, Der Rahmen der Geschichte Jesu did much to lay the foundation of form criticism and is still widely regarded as authoritative. In this book, David Hall examines this pioneering work and questions whether Schmidt did succeed in proving his theory. If his foundational work was defective, then questions are raised, not only about form criticism but also about redaction criticism and other later developments. The criteria used by Schmidt were not peculiar to him and are still in use today. The author's conclusions, therefore, are of central importance to the understanding of the New Testament.
