Cuốn sách đặt cơ sở nền tảng cho Lý thuyết tương tác biểu tượng (Theory of symbolic interactionism). Ông giải thích rằng “bản ngã” (the self) là một quá trình xã hội với sự tương giao giữa “cái tôi”, hình thức thuần khiết của bản ngã và “cái tôi” (Me), hình thức xã hội của bản ngã. Tương giao xã hội được mô tả như là sự hiểu biết về cử chỉ của một cá nhân khác.
