Emerging about 1925 in the southern part of Viet Nam (French Cochinchina), the Cao Dai, a religious sect, attracted (up until the 1950s) more adherents than any other peasant group in the south... Being more important politically than the Hoa Hao, the Cao Dai exercised considerable influence on southern Vietnamese politics for well over half a century.
