In a quest to find in church the mutual support and healing he discovered in 12 Step fellowships, the author explores the history of Alcoholics Anonymous and its relationship to American Christianity. He shows that while AA eventually separated from the Christian parachurch movement from which it emerged, it retained aspects that the church has largely lost. He encourages Christians to reclaim elements of the 12 Step movement in ""recovering church"", and admit all is not fine.
