It is the successor to the Hebraic Bible edited by Rudolf Kittel. Unlike critical editions of the Greek New Testament, the BHS is not intended to reconstruct the original text of the Hebrew Bible. This would not be possible based on the available manuscripts: the oldest direct textual testimonies are the manuscripts discovered from 1949 in the Judean desert in the Qumran caves on the Dead Sea.
