Particular attention is paid to letters, speeches, panegyrics, and the like, which were addressed directly to the Emperor. The language employed by the Fathers in these addresses is described and analyzed where it contributes to an understanding of the place of the Emperor in Christian thought of the century in which Christianity achieved official victory over the religions which had been its rivals in the Empire.
