This dissertation will employ historical-critical methods and focus its energy on answering basic questions, concerning issues such as sources, genre(s), the shape of the underlying tradition, and compositional redaction. These investigations will be followed by a detailed analysis of a theoretical community that might have valued this text and a subsequent theory regarding its date and historical setting. More specifically, I will show that Acts Pet12 Apost. is primarily made up of a Christian-Gnostic allegory of the ascent of the soul which underwent a later adaptation. This adaptation shifts the center of gravity from otherworldly escapism to a mysticism grounded by the earth-based pastoral ministry.
