Những tư tưởng lôgíc học đã ra đời từ rất lâu cùng với lịch sử phát triển của văn minh nhân loại. Từ khởi thủy lôgíc học của Aristotle, đã có rất nhiều nhà tư tưởng phát triển thêm nội dung và phương pháp của lôgíc học truyền thống, trong đó có John Stuart Mill. Do vậy, nghiên cứu tư tưởng lôgíc học của J.S.Mill là công việc có ý nghĩa lý luận sâu sắc.
