The study arose out of an inquiry into the use of the Old Testament in the early church in an effort to discover why Jewish holy writings were adopted as holy scripture in the canon of the Christian church. It became evident that a prior matter required investigation, i.e., what was the form of the Jewish canon at the time the church arose and became separated from Judaism
