There he partnered with the compassionate God in lifting up the destitute, the downtrodden and the persecuted, making their way “as best they could on the cruel edges of the world” (Heb. 11: 38 The Message). These experiences led him to reflect deeply on human evil and human suffering, alongside the goodness and mercy of God.
